In New York, if you are convicted of either DWI or DWAI and it is your first alcohol-related arrest, you will be eligible to participate in the New York State Drinking Driver Program (DDP). The program is administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles but taught by independent program providers. The DDP program consists of approximately fifteen classroom hours over seven weeks. Enrollment in the DDP program is approximately $225.00. Classes explore the dangers of drinking, as well as making responsible choices about not drinking and driving.
You may not be eligible to participate in DDP program if you have taken the DDP program. If the time from your prior completion of DDP and the date of your current arrest is less than five years, you are ineligible for the DDP program. Being eligible for the DDP program is important because it is the gateway to a conditional license. In addition, it is important to remember that you can be referred for further treatment.
